Bread Upma

Bread upma is a flavourful alternative to the regular bread sandwich. It is a great way to use leftover bread slices and also makes a healthy after school snack for kids.

Bread Upma Recipe

Serves  :  3 people

Ingredients

  • Bread  - 10 to 12 slices
  • Oil  -  2 to 3 tbsp
  • Mustard  -  1 tsp
  • Urad dal  -  1 tsp
  • Asafoetida  -  a generous pinch
  • Onion  -  2 medium sized
  • Tomato  -  1 medium sized
  • Turmeric powder  -  1/2 tsp
  • Chilli powder  -  1 tsp
  • Sambar powder  -  1 tsp
  • Salt  -  as required
  • Coriander leaves  -  little(for garnishing)

Method

  1. Cut the bread slices into tiny square pieces. I didn't remove the corners of the bread. If preferred you can remove them.
  2. Chop the onion and tomato into fine pieces.
  3. In a pan, add 2 tbsp oil and once it heats up, add mustard, urad dal and asafoetida.
  4. Once dal turns golden brown, add the finely chopped onion.
  5. Once the onions turn brown, add the finely chopped tomatoes. Add salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder and sambar powder. Mix well. Sprinkle little water if required for the masala to cook well.
  6. Once the raw smell of the powders leave and the vegetables are cooked, add the bread pieces  and stir gently. Add more oil if required.
  7. Cook till the bread pieces coat well with the masala and become crunchy.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of bread for this dish.
  • This is the basic recipe for this dish. You can make variations by adding finely chopped vegetables like carrot, beans, peas, corn etc. Ensure that the vegetables are cooked in such a way that they are crunchy.
  • You can use either one of sambar powder or red chilli powder or both as I have done.
  • You can even add ginger garlic paste or finely chopped ginger/garlic for extra flavour.
