Onion Tomato Thokku Recipe

Serves  -  2 to 3 people

   Ingredients

  • Onion  -  5 small sized
  • Tomato  -  5 small sized
  • Turmeric powder  -  1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder  -  2 tsp
  • Gingelly Oil  -  4 tbsp
  • Mustard  -  1/2 tsp
  • Salt  -  as required
  • Asafoetida -  2 generous pinches

   Method

  1. Finely chop the onion and tomato. Since we are making as thokku, it tastes great only when they are chopped fine.
  2. In a pan add 3 tbsp oil and once heated, reduce the flame and add mustard and asafoetida.
  3. Once mustard crackles add the chopped onion. Add salt and mix well.
  4. Once onions turn translucent, add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and chilli powder. Mix everything well.
  5. Cook in medium flame until the raw smell leaves. Add the remaining 1 tbsp oil while cooking. Keep stirring in between to avoid the thokku from sticking to the pan.
  6. Switch off the stove once the mixture has thickened and oil separates out.
  7. Serve as a side dish with idli, dosa or other tiffin items. You can spread it as a stuffing for bread and make sandwich or even mix with plain rice and pack for lunch box.
  8. This can be stored in refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 days. Use a clean, dry spoon every time.

Notes

  • Use only gingelly oil for this, as this can be stored and used for travel purposes.
  • I have given the quantity for chilli powder as I used Kashmiri chilli powder. If using regular chilli powder, add accordingly. Also if using this thokku for mixing with rice, you might need to increase the quantity of salt and chilli powder.

Try this easy and versatile thokku!!
