Easy Aloo Gravy - No Onion No Garlic Aloo Gravy Recipe

This post explains the preparation of a simple and easy aloo gravy - a no onion no garlic recipe with mild flavors. This gravy goes well with roti, poori or even mild pulao varieties.

I have made this many times on days when we cannot include onion, garlic or any masalas. It is also perfect for people who don't prefer overpowering spices in the dish.

Easy Aloo Gravy

Serves - 3 to 4 people

Ingredients

  • Potatoes - 8 medium sized
  • Tomatoes - 2 big or 4 medium sized
  • Ginger - a small piece
  • Green chilli -  1
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Salt - as required
  • Sugar - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - as required
  • Water - 2 cups
Method
  1. Clean the potatoes well, peel the skin and chop them into small cubes.
  2. Grind tomatoes, ginger and green chilly into a smooth paste. No need to add water as tomatoes are sufficient for grinding into a fine paste.
  3. In a pressure cooker, add oil and temper with cumin seeds.
  4. Once cumin seeds crackle, add the ground paste, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, sugar and salt. Sauté everything together well so that it doesn't stick to the  bottom of the cooker.
  5. Once the raw smell of the paste leaves, add the chopped potato cubes and mix everything well.
  6. Add required water and check for salt. Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles.
  7. Once the pressure releases, add finely chopped coriander leaves and mash few potatoes to get a slightly thicker consistency.
  8. Serve with roti, poori or any pulao varieties.

Notes

  • I have used kashmiri red chilli powder for the bright red color and hence given the quantity accordingly. If using regular chilli powder, add according to the spice level.
  • Sugar is added just to enhance the taste of the dish. You can skip if you don't prefer it.
