Gokulashtami

Krishna Janmashtami also known as Krishnashtami/Gokulashtami/Srikrishna Jayanti/Sree Jayanti/Janmashtami, is an annual celebration of the birth of the Hindu deity Krishna. The festival is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of August – September. The festival is celebrated in the evening as lord Krishna was born at midnight. In most homes in Tamilnadu, people draw footprints of lord krishna using rice flour paste from the entrance of the house till the pooja room. This symbolizes the arrival of lord krishna into the house. The little kids in the house are dressed up as krishna or radha on this day. Some of the commonly made sweets and savouries are vella seedai, uppu seedai, any sweet made with poha(rice flakes), payasam, appam, thenkuzhal, murukku etc. These are offered along with butter, curd, milk, plain rice flakes and fruits. Listed below are the process for making processed rice flour and urad dal flour along with some simple and easy to prepare sweets for this festival, as posted in my blog:
